Kathmandu Animal Treatment Centre

Fall, 2010

Welcome to Little Lotus Hearts' latest update from Kathmandu Animal Treatment Center. For six years, KAT has worked to better the lives of animals in Nepal's capital and largest city, Kathmandu.

September 29th was World Rabies Day, a day that is literally celebrated around the world. Rabies is still a serious problem for both animals and people. 55,000 people die of rabies each year, and many countries conduct cruel poisonings of dogs in an effort to curb rabies. All this suffering need not occur if proper education and vaccination techniques are implemented everywhere--in cities and rural villages across the globe.

In the USA, rabies is seen mainly in wild animals, but there is currently a rise in cat rabies due to owners thinking rabies "isn't a problem anymore." Please remember your cat meets raccoons, skunks, and bats outdoors and therefore needs to be vaccinated!

Below are pictures of KAT's World Rabies Day activities, including a new, beautiful mural about proper compassion and care for street dogs and other fun, educational activities for local children. In many countries, it is the children who care for pets, and therefore they are the most vulnerable family members when it comes to rabies exposure.
A behind-the-scenes glimpse at some of the people who make KAT possible. Hard at work, as usual!
Last but not least, here is KAT's mascot Tara, who LLH has been sponsoring for a few years now. She's looking pretty dignified despite the bath!
