| People joke that Bernard's name isn't very clever, but he was actually named after a friend of my father's, Bernard de Thuilliers. Bernard came to us as a gawky puppy with huge feet and a tongue too big to fit in his mouth.
He made friends with our cocker spaniel, Gitane. He used her small doggie door all his life, even when he grew to be huge! You wouldn't believe he could fit through that little door until you saw him do it.
Like a good St. Bernard, he was loyal, committed to protecting his family, and a little bit drooly. He wanted to be an indoor-only dog, but he'd slobber too much, and his tail would knock things off our tables. He worshipped our cats and would stare at them endlessly, while they kept high on top of the fridge and other places. Bernard didn't want to hurt them--he just wanted to sniff them and drool on them. They hated that!
Bernard passed away too soon. He was survived by all the animals that had come to our house before him. We will never forget him.
