Scarlett, a worldwide feline celebrity, passed away in October, 2008. In 1996, firefighters observed her retrieving her 5 kittens one by one out of a burning building in Brooklyn, NY. She suffered serious injuries through this ordeal, including burning her ears and blisters on her eyes. She collapsed after retrieving the last kitten and having touched noses with each of them. A firefighter rushed them all to the North Shore Animal League.

North Shore Animal League nursed her and her four surviving kittens back to health and found them loving homes. Scarlett's story reached all the way to Japan and thousands of inquiries came in to NSAL about her and her kittens.

Scarlett passed away of kidney failure, but her legacy lives on through her Sponsorship program for animals in distress, and the Scarlett room, a blog for all the animals in her Sponsorship program.

If you'd like to help animal victims of fires in your community, you might consider buying your local fire department some pet-sized oxygen masks.
